Chapter 77 She gave him the money right in front of the other patients. Steven checked his bank balance, and he

smiled. Meanwhile, Emma sobbed. “I only have enough left for lunch. I did my best.” She pretended to

wipe her tears. She was a gentle woman to begin with, and now she looked like a damsel in distress.

Steven was about to say something, but one of the patients told Emma, “Three grand is a lot.”

The other told Steven, “You have a son, don‘t you? I don‘t see him around.”

“Yeah, he should help you out too. You can‘t keep asking your daughter to help you.”

Steven opened his mouth, but he swallowed his words. He was going to tell Emma to get him some

food and new clothes. You went missing for a year. Three grand is not enough! He would wring every

last cent out of her, but since the other patients had voiced their dissent, he would let this slide. She‘s

not going anywhere anyway. I can take as much as I want later. Therefore, he said, “Yeah, yeah, I get

it. You can get on with your work. I don‘t need you to stay at the hospital to take care of me.”

Emma nodded gratefully. “Take care, and call me if you need anything.” She pretended to be a good

girl, but the first thing she did after she left was block Steven‘s number. He thought she would let them

exploit her again, but unbeknownst to them, this was the last time she would talk to them. The next

time they mel, they would be nothing but strangers.

Kaleb told Trevor about Emma‘s past right after she left his office.

Trevor was surprised to hear that. “Steven and his wife are not her real parents?”

“Yeah,” Kaleb said. “She wouldn‘t lie about this. She must be desperate if she wants to use that to cut

off all ties with Steven and Simon.”

Trevor pursed his lips and said nothing. Yeah, those *ssholes won‘t let her go until they wring every last

cent out of her, but she doesn‘t have enough money to support their lifestyle. He was about to ask her

out and talk about Steven and Simon. He would help her if she needed it. He had a hundred ways to

keep those greedy pigs away from her forever. But she doesn‘t need it now. Trevor said thanks and

was about to hang up.

Kaleb said, “Oh, and she said she owes me one meal.”

Huh? Hey, I helped her out too after she came back. Why didn‘t I get a meal?

Kaleb clicked his tongue. “I miss her cooking, but I don‘t think it‘s appropriate to tell her I want her to

cook for me.”

Trevor snecred, “Then don‘t bring it up to her.”

Trevor hung up in annoyance, and Kaleb chortled.

Steven told Simon to get him out of the hospital not long after Emma left.

The police officer had released hiin after a lecture the last time he was caught. He eagerly asked

Steven, “How much did she give?”

Steven leaned against the passenger seat smugly. “Three grand.”

Simon scoffed. “Three grand? She should have given at least thirty grand.” He was used to getting a lot

of money from Trevor, so three grand was too little for him.

Steven lectured, “Ah, we‘re not in a hurry.” After a pause, he added, “She gave me the money right

away. I bet she has more where that came from. She must have gotten a lot of money from that

divorce. There‘s no way she didn‘t take a single cent. He‘s a rich guy. She‘s not that stupid, and she‘s

still as weak as ever.” Steven felt smug, thinking that he had a piggy bank now. “Looks like we were

right to keep her. Who would have thought she would be our piggy bank?”

Simon laughed as well. Yeah, Dad loves mondy. He wouldn‘t take Emma in, since we‘d have to spend

more money on her, but Mom just had to take her in. She was really adamant about it too, which is out

of character for her. Still, that was the right call.

They went through that three grand in a flash. Emma was waiting for their call. She might have blocked

their numbers, but they would call her with another phone number. As expected, she got a call from an

unknown number, and she picked it up. Simon roared, “Where are you, Emma? Why are you not at

home?”

Emma asked innocently, “I‘m at my friend‘s house. What do you need?”

Simon grumbled, “Dad spent all that money you gave—”

Before he could finish, she said, “Hello? Hello?” She muttered, “What did you say, Simon? Can you

repeat yourself? The signal‘s gone bad. I didn‘t quite get it.”

Simon was annoyed, but he patiently repeated himself.

Emma said, “Sorry, Simon. The signal‘s really bad. Talk later.”

She hung up right away. Her phone was turned off when he called her again, much to his chagrin. Bad

signal? That was a lie. She played us like a fool! She doesn‘t want to give us any money!

Steven thought it would be easy to exploit her again, so he wondered why his son looked so angry.

“What happened?”

IT

Simon told him what happened, and Steven flew into a rage. “She‘s trying to hide from us?”

Simon snorted. “I bet so.”

Steven came up with a plan to handle it right away. He said, “It‘s fine. She‘s a scriptwriter for a

production agency, isn‘t she? We‘ll make a ruckus at her workplace. She has to see us. If she still

refuses to come out, we‘ll destroy her reputation. We‘ll get her fired and blacklisted from the industry!”

Simon supported his father‘s plan fully. “Nice idea, Dad. Why didn‘t I think of that? We deserve the

money. We spent so much raising her up.”

That was a lie. All the money spent on Emma came from his late mother‘s dowry. Steven had never

spent a single cent on her.
